WIKING FEST IN THE MONT ST. JEAN FARM WATERLOO

During the bloody battle of Waterloo the Duke of Wellington used the Mont St. Jean farm as hospital for his wounded soldiers. This was in 1815.

Today it has become a very beautiful restaurant, with a brewery and a museum. And sometimes there are festivals of Wikings, Scots, Celtics and others and each Sunday morning there is a big flea market on the grounds around the farm.

We went there on Sunday to see the Wikings and the stalls and all Wiking accessories, and had the intention to have a little lunch there on the terrace. But there were so many people and the cobble stones made it hard to walk so that our visit was quite short but I could take some photos and anyway next year the Wikings are coming back and I have seen it already.

I could see the Waterloo Lion from far

The parking was full, difficult to find a parking place

The first Wiking I saw posed for me with pleasure

A today's Wiking, my son

The entrance

There were a few falcons

I wanted to take a picture of the dog, but the girl also posed, not really a Wiking

I thought the girl had a dog on her lap but in reality it was one of the fury scarfs of stuffed foxes which were in fashion to my grandma's time.

and the Wiking rocks !

AWWWW MONDAY - WEEKEND JUNE 5

Linking to AWWW MONDAYS

******

Saturday the summer weather had changed into a misty cool day from 26° we suddenly had 12°, and had to return to autumn clothes ! I felt like the bad weather I was tired and a little dizzy.

In the afternoon I did some shopping bought a new basket for Miss Rosie and then went to see Mr. G. He had been returned to our hospital to stay there for a few days because they had to do  a scan again and found a slight bleeding. Now a second has to be done to see if the bleeding has stopped. I don't know how many days he has to stay here. After spending hours on the phone to get his doctor on the phone, I was completely exhausted in the evening. Fortunately I found him looking as if he was in best health and he spoke also clearly. What a vicious disease this Parkinson !

Rosie makes pasta in her new basket and is happy ! At least one in the family !

Sunday morning the sun was there again but it was not very hot, as the weatherman had foreseen.

Fortunately he was wrong and it became so warm that Myriam and I decided to have an ice cream on the now even more beautiful terrace of the Mont St. Jean farm. Nicole and her daughter joined us and we stayed there enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful view and of course the delicious ice cream. Nicole  and her daughter sit under the new parasols.

I had to leave a little earlier because I wanted to see Mr. G before his scan tomorrow. I was allowed to visit him over the weekend for two hours. Unfortunately it was a bad day for him  so I stayed not too long but long enough to put some things right with the nurses. I can understand that it is the weekend and they were only two but still they have to  give priority to people who can't handle things alone.

Now I have to wait for the verdict on Tuesday or Wednesday.

WEEKEND REVIEW APRIL 29 - CELTIC FESTIVAL

Waterloo had a busy time this weekend. At the Mont St.Jean farm, which during the Waterloo battle of 1815 had been used as hospital by Wellington for the British soldiers an old village out of that time had been built there for the "Gordon Celtic Week" although the week was only 3 days long.  I visited the Gordon Market when the stands had just been installed and nobody was there yet !

There were old things to buy from skulls to chess, clothes and fur tails.

Funny wooden little sculptures, hanging plants, etc.

Beer mugs in horn, very original !

a blacksmith, and of course Waterloo beer in the shop, and souvenirs.

You could also buy fashion jewels and flower ribbons for the hair.

While the day before it was very cloudy, the restaurant l'Orangerie du Prince was empty, but it was not at all the case when I returned. The sun was shining, it was warm and the restaurant was full, inside and outside. I sat on this beautiful deck with a view over the fields.

This time I had a view on the  Gordon Celtic Games but there were so many people that I only saw from time to time something swinging through the air.  Nicole joined me and we were sitting there chatting with people and watching ! After 45 min we had waited for the Waiter, I finally had enough and picked up our drinks at the bar. The barman didn't say anything, because the waiters were running around and apparently there were not enough.

Then we walked around and saw this prehistoric monster, which made little kids scream

There were other attractions too, and Pony and horse riding children.  And something very special happened : For the first time in my life I petted a horse on his face !! I had always been so afraid of horses.

From tomorrow on I will be in Egypt at the Red Sea ! 30° and sunshine !!

In Belgium you offer to your friends and family a Lilly of the Valley, happy first of May to you !

WEEKEND REVIEW June 11, 2016

As you maybe know, my camera had been stolen the first day I was on holidays in Marmaris (Turkey) Not from Turkish people, certainly not, but a group of Ukrainians had arrived, and as they sadly are famous for stealing everything they can (cutlery and towels included) I suppose that my camera does her job now in an Ukrainian family.  So I had to buy a new one, my spare camera is not good enough for regular photographing.

I quickly found the one I wanted, again a Canon Ixus but a better model, I still can use my battery and charger ! I only had to buy a chip card.

So far it's still unpacked, it should be for my birthday in July but I think I have to use it before, because of the quality of the spare camera pictures.

As last year I was a volunteer to help for bicentenary festivities of the Waterloo battle, from time to time I go there just to check if there are still tourists coming because the renovated site has become so ugly and has lost all its charm as all old houses, cafés and restaurants had been demolished and replaced just by one new built !

There were a few tourists but not comparable to when it hadn't been renovated ! No local inhabitant would ever go there to have a drink as they did before. Mr. G. and myself included.

As the weather was so nice and warm (the weatherman had announced rain) I sat down and listened to English, and Dutch tourists.

On my way back I "checked" the Mont St. Jean farm , which had once been a hospital for Wellington's wounded soldiers and noticed that there were far more people and a French tourist group who listened to all the explanations about the farm.

Sunday morning was the same, rain announced and no rain so Nicole and I decided to go to Brussels Midi market it had been at least a year we hadn't been there. We bought some underwear for nearly nothing and Nicole a pullover, I found a cute little case for my new camera !

It looks like Rosie as a kitten. After having bought some fruits and a roasted chicken, we had a drink in a typical Brussels' café, where people still speak the special Brussels' language, a mixture between French and Flemish and special words.

Since years it's always the same man who plays his accordion and sings Elvis songs but also typical folklore songs. There was a very cheerful atmosphere, people sang with him  and we alll chatted together. Then we took the bus home.

The yearly miracle happened this Sunday ! 5 years ago my friend Ilona gave me this Hibiscus plant, which should bloom and be full of flowers. Unfortunately this one looks very healthy and nice but never blooms except once a year and only ONE flower, therefore I had bought a twig of fake pink flowers and had stuck it in the plant. I had forgotten that the only Hibiscus flower which was blooming was orange. Now it looks like this ! Very special. But the flower will not last long, usually one day !

L'ORANGERIE

Since the Mont St. Jean  farm near the Waterloo Lion, has been renovated for the bicentenary of the Waterloo battle, behind the farm a new Brasserie was built which starts to have a lot of success. You can eat there or just have a drink. It is quite big and ideal for receptions, or meetings. Although it is modern, it looks a bit Art Deco and gives a cosy feeling.

The farm had been a ruin and now it looks very nice there is also the distillery of the Waterloo beer inside.

On a huge parking space this bus welcomes you

The old barns are decorated with old tools and other things used in the past.

Along the opposite barn are straw bales making a wall, which of course dog Charlie had to water.

and then you arrive at the Brasserie

The views from there are stunning, as far as you can see only fields. The terrace in summer is always full.

and this is the bar where we sat on Sunday on comfortable leather sofas and chairs.
