FRIDAY's FAVE FIVE

On Monday it was not cold but it rained so I remained in my room and worked with my computer. In the afternoon we had our activities, still the competition with other retirement homes, games I don't like very much because they are a little too childish rather made for toddlers. But our animators had no choice they had to follow the others. I wished I could meet the person who has made up this program, I think he or she should think how they would react when they reach the 70, 80 or 90 and their head is still as clear as ever.

This time we should put our hands in a bag and define what was in it. I felt the thing and thought of a lamplighter and that was correct. The others chatted together while I was occupied and that was how it was every day. Fortunately this contest is over now !

I have bought a weather station and was proud that I could set it, the only thing I couldn't find was the wireless connection to the outside station.

But there is always a helping hand and the son of a resident came and fixed the connection now it is working very well. It's easy to see the outside temperature so I know how to dress, as with our up and down temperature weather it's a difficult task to find an appropriate cloth !

One morning while I was sleeping like a baby, I was woken up to take a blood sample. I wasn't fully awake yet but still found it strange since I had already given a blood test a month ago. It was the nurse who I call the dragon because she just walks into the rooms like an oaf.

After she had stabbed me in the arm several times and still no blood came out, she suddenly disappeared but told me that I shouldn't eat anything. Now I had enough, I got up, tore the door open and asked the dragon, who looked at me in shock, what was actually going on, whereupon she told me nothing, I could eat breakfast, everything was fine. Nothing was okay, I wanted an explanation which I got later from her boss, she had mixed up the rooms ! Luckily it ended up with me and not with someone who was helpless. Of course they apologized.

The week ended very cheerful, the bar was opened ! It was closed all summer and visitors had to get their drinks from a vending machine. Now that you're more in the mood for a coffee, the bar opens! But after all, it was associated with a happy party and the employees made a little show and there was dancing again and we formed a farandole to get to the bar. It was a very successful celebration!

That gives you an idea of our nurses (except my "Dragon") she wasn't there !

HODGEPODGE SEPT 26

1. It's officially fall y'all...in the northern hemisphere anyway. What are three of your favorite things about this particular season of the year ?

Some people find autumn beautiful, not me, I only see the leaves rotting on the ground.

No favorite things ! I hate fall ! The leaves fall, my mood falls and the temperature fall ! The right word for this season ! Although I think we will not have seasons anymore, it's still very warm for fall ! If it continues like that, we could celebrate Christmas with a barbecue !

2. Your favorite fall fabric-denim, flannel, tweed, corduroy, tartan, polar fleece, leather? Do you own something made with your favorite fall fabric?

The whole year long I wear the same clothes except flannel and polar fleece, there is no big temperature difference between summer and autumn or winter. We have roller coaster weather. Hot, cold, hot, cold ... very difficult to choose your clothes !

3. According to Everyday Health here are ten healthy fall foods- apples (flavonoids may improve brain health), pears (for heart friendly fiber), cranberries (helps your body fight oxidative stress) winter squash (for eye health), pumpkin (another great source of Vitamin A), leeks (an anti-inflammatory food), brussel sprouts (full of fiber and anti-oxidants), sweet potatoes (loaded with Vit A and C), parsnips (keep your bones healthy with Vit K), and broccoli (may help prevent cancer). How many on the list do you eat on a regular basis? Which one is your favorite? Which one gets a big no thanks from you?

Broccoli Italian style

I would say broccoli and (of course) Brussels'sprouts

4. Tell us about the last time (or a recent time) you experienced a wave of nostalgia?

For the moment I can't tell about a wave of nostalgia, I try by all means not to be nostalgic until a wave of nostalgia would hurt me less. It's only 2 years that Rick is gone.

5. Sept. 22nd was National Daughter's Day. Like mother, like daughter...does this idiom ring true for you? You may answer in terms of your own role as a daughter or, if you have daughters, then your role as a mother of daughters.

I have no daughters, I have one son. He has become a nice guy and although we have sometimes different opinions in general we have a very good relationship. We see each other on the phone and he comes to visit me about all two months. I live in Belgium and he in the Netherlands.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I think I told you about my alcoholic neighbor. The more I know her, the more I like her. We can laugh together and have nice conversations. Although she drinks so much, you don't notice it at all, only when she has to "refuel" again around four o'clock, she look very tired and her facial features are tense. She then disappears into her room. She is very generous and helpful and doesn't harm anybody. I couldn't ask for a better neighbor. It doesn't bother me that I open a bottle of champagne for her every morning and she then drinks it during the morning, it makes her happy and at 87 years she has nothing to lose.

WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 21

It was a rather quiet weekend, Saturday it was still warm and we were all outside and played a little game, we had to find out the job that was described and then jobs that no longer exist, such as a man who lit the lanterns in the evening.

We were able to sit outside until 5 a.m., then it got a little cool.

On Sunday the sun had disappeared and it was no longer possible to sit outside, so we stayed inside. I don't know if the weather was to blame, but somehow we were all like sleepyheads.

Tomorrow a new week begins and I believe although of today it is officially autumn, that we can still have summer temperatures in November, there is no season anymore.
