FRIDAY's FAVE FIVE

The week continued with this lousy weather and I had to force myself to get up I badly needed a cup of coffee and cat Rosie refused to make and bring me one. Finally I was dressed and ready for the day but it had taken so much energy, that I collapsed on the sofa which I didn't  leave anymore I was so tired as if I had climbed up the mount Everest. To change from computer to TV screen I looked through the window screen.

With interest I watched a magpie sitting in/on the tree. I took a picture from this charming bird which you can admire here. Unfortunately it must have flown away while I took the picture

A little sunshine came out while it rained and I thought I have to take a photo for the future generation just to prove them that even here we have sun from time to time.

Scrabble day was better, we were the usual four, Nicole who is now out of hospital and home again, had an appointment with the eye doctor.

After scrabble came the best we had two cakes for 4 persons so we could play : "All you can eat" !

Nevertheless a quarter of the cake was left !

Finally I have met my new neighbour ! She had moved in on Wednesday but I hadn't heard nothing. She invited me for a cup of coffee and we realized that we were two chatterboxes ! We talked about the building and she had some questions. Then her son arrived, I have to say the second son because she has 3 and one daughter. All have 2 or 3 children which makes a lot of grand-children compared to my only Toby. The son was very nice and loved to chat too. Finally I said good bye and wanted to go next door into my apartment and noticed that I had no key but instead my smartphone and a pencil !

Now I couldn't get in ! The son tried through the balcony to open my living door but it was locked. Calling a professional to open the door would cost a fortune because it's blinded and has 3 locks. (Try to break in) Suddenly I remembered that I had a spare key in my car, but no car keys ! I thought it would be cheaper to break a window in my little car and take the key out. The son looked for a hammer and then we both went down into the garage. Fortunately he first tried one door and .... it opened ! I had forgotten to lock the car ! Distraction was my luck this day ! We laughed, I took the keys and gave it immediately to my neighbor, so she keeps my spare key and I hers just in case it would happen again !

This was the first time that it happened and hopefully the last time.

The last day the sun came out very modest, but still and apparently we will have a nice warm and sunny weekend. I visited Nicole for the first time since she left the hospital, her daughter stays with her the first weeks to see how she will cope alone.

My son and Toby will come on Sunday, Toby and I stay together here I have to think what interesting things we could do together while my son visits his Dad.

Unfortunately he can only come for a day from Amsterdam to avoid the quarantine. I am so fed up with this dammit virus ! Keeps even families apart !

Only Rosie enjoys her lockdown sleep as usual

HODGEPODGE

1. We're approaching Memorial Day Weekend in the US of A...will you mark this in some way? If so tell us how. According to a list found here some things you might do in honor of Memorial Day would be-shop in a Veteran owned business, learn to play a patriotic song, watch the Memorial Day concert, take a virtual tour of the White House, write a letter to a soldier or a soldier's family, fly a flag, attend a Memorial Day parade, donate flowers for a soldier's grave, put together a care package for a soldier, and take a moment of silence at 3 PM (the National Moment of Remembrance)....of the ideas mentioned are there any you will try?

These are pictures of 1945 from a city in Germany where I was born and lived until I was 14. Therefore we have never celebrated a war, a soldier or heros ! We fly flags for peace and there is no military for war purposes in Germany anymore. They have had enough.

2. What's something recently that made you 'come to attention'?

I noticed that even in rush hours the streets are empty, the boutiques are empty, probably due to the lockdown, although all shops are open. I think people learned to buy on Internet and now continue !

3. In what area of your life do you need to 'soldier on'?

As I am retired I do not play soldier, anyway that's not in my character

4. As a long weekend approaches and summer draws near, what's a favorite food from your childhood you think about adding to the menu?

No long weekend is approaching, we just had one, and I can't remember that I had any favorite food as a child, I didn't like eating. I ate because it was on the table !

5. Your favorite patriotic movie?

That has not yet been created as far as I know, I am a European, because we all have different passports, I am German, my husband Italian, our son is German and Italian, but born in Brussels. That's why there is no patriotic movie for our family and we are only patriotic when it comes to Europe.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I wonder how people celebrate wars and heros, usually heros are dead, and for what ? for politics !

Why the WWI is still celebrated and the second one too. I am allergic to all military things. I had my share, I was born in the middle of WW II in a German bunker and I spent my first night in a drawer because there were no baby beds. My Disneyland was the ruins, the basements without house on top, and I think we had a lot of fun. Nobody watched over us the adults were busy to dig out their belongings and put away the rubble. I was told that becoming a soldier is bad, all uniforms are bad and parents who had a son in the army never mentioned it they were ashamed. Germany had decided no war anymore and soldiers only to safe and protect people in critical countries like Afganistan, etc

This hodgepodge was not for me !  But I decided to participate !

FLEA MARKET A WATERLOO

Waterloo had a flea market each Sunday on the parking space in front of the Supermarket Carrefour. Private and professional antiques collectors came from all corners of Belgium. It was really nice to walk around especially when the weather was nice. Then it was decided to make the Supermarket bigger and add other shops. The fleamarkt disappeared and lots of people were very angry.

Then came the lockdown and we had to stay home. And we are still home because flea markets are still closed. These are pictures from one Sunday when we had visitors from abroad and we made a tour around the fleamarket.

WEEKEND

Thanks to the still lasting half lockdown, I have the feeling to live in a retirement home but alone ! Restaurants, and everything which could distract you are still closed and the now open terraces are empty because they are litteraly blown away by a strong wind and rain.

Saturday morning my cleaning lady landed in front of our building, I say landing because she told me the wind blow so hard that the was pushed to entrance ! I prepared the fresh laundry for Mr.G and then had lunch. I had to do some shopping for him he needed Wafels again and I also bought him sushis, because he loves them. Then I returned home put my stuff away and watched a movie. I saw the beginning and then something with animals and realized that I had fallen asleep nearly for more then an hour. I had a cup of coffee and watched my movie again.

I had called Mr. G in the morning and he spoke quite well for a little while, same at lunch but in the evening it was again hard to understand him. But I am optimistic again it seems that the new dosage starts to work !

Besides two phone calls I only talked to cat Rosie. And this has been my adventurous saturday !

Coronavirus prisoner

On Sunday morning I wanted to sleep a little longer, outside it was again awful, but as it is when you want to sleep you wake up with the roosters !

I had ordered 2 pullovers and after 6 weeks they finally arrived just when I thought I would complain. So I had something new to dress for Mr. G in the clinic. Of course he didn't realize that I had something new and asked me when he could come home. Difficult question because I don't know. He is still confused but speaks much better, but for walking he is not sure and looses quickly the balance.

The sun had come out and it was a pity that we couldn't sit outside on the terrace of the restaurant, but for that he is still too weak.

I said hello to Myriam who lives on my way back home and we chatted a bit while watching a documentary about a very beautiful home for abandonned animals.

Rosie is lucky since she was born 14 years ago, she had never been homeless and always with us.

SUNDAY SELECTION - HEYSEL PARK BRUSSELS

In 1958 the World Exposition took place in Brussels. It was the first major World Expo registered after World War II. it was just in front of the King's Palace in Brussels/Laeken.

The only "left over" from this exposition is the Atomium which became the sign of Brussels, like the Eiffel tower in Paris.

Today nature has again taken over the park and from all buildings of the world exposition there is nothing left, except  the Atomium. It is a beautiful park where, when the weather is nice people walk around or picnic on the lawn.
