SUNDAY SELECTION - THE MARCINELLE (Belgium) MINING DISASTER

 Today it is a museum

In June 1946, Italy and Belgium signed "the men for coal" agreement: as Europe struggled to recover from the impact of the second world war, Italy agreed to send its surplus manpower to the mines of southern Belgium, in return for 2-3 million tonnes of coal a year at preferential rates.

Between 1946 and 1949, 77,000 Italians reached Belgium in convoys, far exceeding the manpower target. On arrival, they were dispatched to various parts of the country, where they were housed in corrugated iron hangars or barrack-blocks—some built by the Nazi occupiers to house Russian prisoners of war. They were indeed more like concentration camps.

All but 12 of the 274 miners in the Bois du Cazier perished on 8 August, 1956 in the southern town of Marcinelle, after a mining wagon, incorrectly placed in an elevator cage, struck an oil pipe and electrical cables, triggering a deadly fire. The victims had 12 different nationalities. The largest number - 136 - were Italians who had emigrated to Belgium to work in the coal industry. Therefore, a rapid description of the policy framework which affected them can help to better understand the changes produced afterwards by European integration. You can read the whole horrible story HERE

SUNDAY SELECTION

Each Sunday morning there is a flea market in Waterloo, which starts at 8 am and finishes at 2 pm

It's amazing which kind of things you find here ! The worst I have ever seen was a basket containing false teeth !

It started with an emergency, fortunately there was a bench

Of course there are also a lot of tourists. Usually I always see them with a camera here it was with nappies !

I wonder where this poor head will hang on a wall !

Need glasses ?

SUNDAY SELECTION

These are pictures I have taken when I visited the south of Morocco and we went on a camel ride to the desert where we waited besides our camel for the sunset. It was wonderful ! Unfortunately the pictures of the sunset were not !

SUNDAY SELECTIONS, SUNDAY SNAPSHOT

When I was in the South of France, my friend took me to her cousin who had two enormous turtles in his garden.  As they didn't like each other they both had a very spacious enclosure separated by a wooden fence.

I had never seen such big turtles and their owners hadn't expected that they became as big as a leather pouffe I had seen in Morocco. They had taken 30 years ago from Northern Africa,  two little turtles (which today is strictly forbidden) which became big and bigger. Fortunately they had enough space to keep them almost like pets !

They understand their names and come "running" especially if you have some salad leaves. In winter they take them in (I wonder how ) and put them besides their open fire. There they start their winter sleep and guests who come think that there are two enormous strange round rocks sitting on each side of the open fire. At least there it is warm. In spring they go in their enclosure again where each of the turtles have a "little" house where they can go if it is bad weather ! I was very impressed !
