Only few people know that the famous Manneken Pis, symbol of Brussels. also has a dog, Zinneke Pis.
If you own a dog which is "composed" of different breeds, the Brussels' people call it a Zinneke.

There are several stories about the statue of Manneken Pis (Peeing little man). I only know this story :
Manneken Pis is actually the young Duke Godfrey III of Leuven. When he was two years old, his father died and two noblemen from the house of Berthout declared war. Godfrey’s guardians asked the Count of Flanders for help. The Count agreed, and placed little Godfrey in a basket that hung from an oak tree as a symbol of encouragement for the troops. And encourage them he did – every now and then the little Godfrey stood up and peed on the heads of the enemies. Godfrey’s allies won the battle and celebrated in Brussels, where they planted the oak tree. Legend states that this is why the street next to Manneken Pis is named Rue du Chêne, meaning ‘oak street.’ And, of course, next to the oak, they erected a statue of the young peeing lord.
It’s a tradition in Brussels to dress Manneken Pis at special occasions. His wardrobe, which contains more than 1000 costumes including the expensive outfit gifted by Louis XV of France, is kept at the Maison du Roi.
The first clothes Manneken Pis ever received were gifted by Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, who was the governor of the Austrian Netherlands. As well as historical clothing, the wardrobe also contains modern costumes, such as a Mickey Mouse, Elvis, Michael Jackson and many more.
Between 1919 and 1940, Manneken-Pis received one new outfit each year. After World War II, Manneken Pis' wardrobe grew on average by five to fifteen outfits per year. And by the 1980s, the number of costumes rose to twenty-five. Today, around 20 to 30 new outfits are added on an annual basis. Here are the some of his

Since 1986 a flower carpet is made on the Grand'Place in Brussels.
The Flower Carpet is 70 m long by 24 m wide. 1,680 m² of begonias, dahlias, grass and bark.
A hundred volunteers assemble the carpet in less than six hours.
The
first Flower Carpet of Brussels was created in 1971 and has been a
showstopper every two years on the Grand-Place since 1986. It is exposed from August 12 to 15th.
As it was so hot I thought I better watch on the Webcam of the Grand Place. As it should start on the 12, I looked at the Webcam already at 6 pm on the 10th and what did I see :

on the 11th morning it hadn't made a lot of progress !
I thought they have to hurry up if it should be ready for the next day in the morning, but the Webcam showed me this at 11 am
But at 8 pm on the 11th, there was a start !

and at 10 am on the 12th it was finally ready and people arrived or were already there. The poor flowers in this heat ! There were not so many people probably because it started to get more and more hot. They probably arrive late afternoon or evening.
and this is the pattern of the 2022 carpet, the first one since 4 years ! Usually it's done each two years, but due to the Corona problems it had to wait !
On Sunday 35° are announced, clouds and a thunderstorm .... I sincerely hope the weatherman is wrong !

While my son visited his father in the clinic, I took 10 year old Toby to the place where the Palace of Justice stands and from which you have the best view all over Brussels ! He liked it very much, took pictures, ate an ice cream and returned very content home. We had seen Brussels in half an hour !!
First thing I wanted to do at home was looking at the pictures. I opened my camera to take out the memory card and stated with horror that there was none, it still stuck in my computer from the last time ! I was really furious and angry but there is nothing to do, I still have pictures from this place but my grandson Toby is missing ! In 1958 the World Exposition took place in Brussels. It was the first major World Expo registered after World War II. it was just in front of the King's Palace in Brussels/Laeken.
The only "left over" from this exposition is the Atomium which became the sign of Brussels, like the Eiffel tower in Paris.
