The Berlaymont towers over the entire district
an old catholic church is squeezed between old and new buildings
Bruxelles was full of these old mansions, unfortunately an entire district was demolished to build the Berlaymont, and create the European quarter.

Some fine looking building and lots of contrast.

The Berlaymont dominates the area. I've not seen it from that angle before and didn't recognise it.
ReplyDeleteThe old mansions were well designed, well cared for and essential for the streetscape. Did the houses have no heritage protection? Did the owners pull down the houses at 3 am, without getting permission from the Council or whoever?
ReplyDeleteThe owners had nothing to say, it was decided by the government to create the European district just there and all houses were demolished, the owners got an indemnity !
DeleteIt looks like an oil drum. Most unattractive.
