BAD BREISIG ALONG THE RHINE

When my father retired he choose to go back to Germany to the region of Bonn which had been the capital of Germany until the wall fell.

He choose the part between  Cologne and Coblence and they moved into the little town, rather a village called Bad Breisig, which was a thermal city.

This part of the Rhine is very beautiful and also the cities and villages along the Rhine

My parents died in the 1990th and I had sold their house. It had been a long time that I haven't been back there, because I strictly know anybody there. They were all friends of my parents and had also passed away or had moved. I took a friend with me to show here the region where I have lived most of the time I spent in Germany and that was Bonn, which was only about 20 km from Bad Breisig.

Below you see the part of the Rhine

I just give you an idea of what you can see if you take a cruise on the Rhine from Cologne to Coblence.

There are many castles sitting on the mountains along the Rhine

The whole area has only timbered houses, only new once are not timbered

This had been our Bed & Breakfast, it was an old mansion which had belonged to a Doctor. The new owners had transformed it into a B&B and we liked it very much

all along the Rhine the riverside looks like that

The catholic church in Bad Breisig

Sometimes the Rhine goes out of his bed and floods over the whole riverside until into the city. On this hous the dates are written, how high the water was, nearly up to the door But the people there are so used to flooding that in a few days everything looks clean again.

We stayed there for three days, unfortunately we weren't lucky with the weather it rained each day ! Or in the morning or in the evening and for a month of July it was rather cold.

I start to feel like an old grandma who lives in her memories and looks in old photo albums to remember how nice it was when you could take your car, bus or train or whatever and go wherever you wanted to.

MY CORONA ARMCHAIR TRAVELS - LITTLE TOWN ALONG THE RHINE

When my father retired from the Commun Market (today EU) they left Brussels and returned to Germany in the Region between Bonn and Coblenz in a little town called Bad Breisig at the Rhine. Meanwhile they both passed away and other people live in their house, but I wanted to see the little village and the beautiful surroundings once again and that was in 2015 ! All old houses in this area are half timbered and very well maintained.

The Rhine. When I was a child it was so clean that we could swim in the Rhine, then it became very dirty and now everything had been done to get it clean again. But I wouldn't swim in there today !

The church of Bad Breisig

And all along the Rhine promenade these half timbered houses.

Each year the Rhine needs to stretch out and does more or less big floods ! It can happen that half of the little town is under water. Our favorite cafe was this one, which had signs outside on the wall which showed how high the water was. People are so used to floods that in very short time all is cleaned up and it looks as if nothing had ever happened.

.

In most of these houses are restaurants with a beautiful view on the Rhine and the heavy traffic on it

This cute pink house was our Bed & Breakfast.

The food was very good too !

HOLIDAYS AT THE RHINE

Ilona and I wanted to take some short holidays in Germany and as I hadn't been in the little town where my parents lived after my father's retirement since nearly 20 years we decided to go there. It is a beautiful old Spa town situated between Bonn and Coblenz.

I had booked a room in a Bed & Breakfast which is in old mansion close to the Rhine.

The building

The kitchen was very cozy and there was a nice garden behind the house.

Our room too was very welcoming.

nd

We saw little squirrels eating from the bowl which the owner had put there and protected with an umbrella.

We took our first drink at the Rhine and watched the enormous transport ships. There were so many ships it was almost like a highway.

Bad Breisig (the little town) has mostly half timbered houses which look very beautiful.

There is also a nice little church

Unfortunately in the evening a heavy rain started which lasted during the whole night and unfortunately the whole next day.

The Bed & Breakfast Lady brought us two cups of coffee, when she saw on the balcony in our Bathrobes. What a nice service. ! Then we had a very nice breakfast in the pink breakfast room. There also was a Chinese couple and we chatted a bit together.

After breakfast we did some shopping and hoped the rain would stop.
But it didn't. We had to stay in the car and drove along the Rhine.

After supper we returned to our room. I just had time to download the few pictures when my little travel laptop decided to give up its soul.

I had to finish my post on my Kindle which is not so easy.

Anyway tomorrow we return home.
