WORDLESS WEDNESDAY

When I visited Liverpool years ago I needed some cash. As in Belgium we call a bank machine "Mr. Cash". I thought it must be the same in the UK and asked a man where was the next "Mr. Cash" He looked at me with big eyes and said "I am not a Mr. Cash", I was surprised that he didn't understand and described what I wanted ! He started to laugh and said :" Aww, you mean a "hole in the wall" ! Now it was me who was surprised and found that expression wonderful ! I told my friends we should rename our Mr. Cash as " trou dans le mur" !

  1. That made me laugh. I often wonder how foreign visitors can understand some of our strange nicknames for things.

  3. I picked up Hole in the Wall many years ago from TV. We call them ATMs, Automatic (bank) Teller Machines. They are disappearing as we go cashless.

  6. How funny! I never imagined they'd be called anything but ATMs. I think I'd figure out "bank machine," but never "hole in a wall!"

  8. That was funny! Names we take for granted can confuse others.

  9. We don't make it easy for non-English speakers lol. Not sure how much the phrase is still used especially as now you can also find free standing ATMs in places like malls.
