COLOGNE AROUND THE STATION

When I visited my old schoolfriend from 1951 (!) we wanted to make a tour in Cologne. It had been a long time I hadn't been in Cologne which I had known in my childhood. But then it looked completely different as it had been severely damaged during WWII and there were still a lot of ruins around.

We left the car outside and took the train and as in each city here too street "artists" had done their work.

My beloved Rhine looked all grey

I didn't recognize the station at all it had been completely renovated

I tried to make more pictures but it was impossible, the wind was so strong that you could hardly walk !

But I could take a picture from the Rhine

In front of the station I saw this huge "tent" looking like building. It was the Musical Dome which is a unique theater because of its extraordinary glass and concrete construction and at the same time an architectural landmark directly on the Rhine River promenade.

The market  place and the shopping streets hadn't changed

I noticed a new statue of a singer who only sang about Cologne with very funny texts. He also had composed the most famous carnival songs.

Want a Rolex ??

We then had lunch in an old Brewery near the Dome.

One thing I have to say, I have never seen so many sorts of cake, cookies, or bread like in Germany

The Roman Germanic Museum.

Unfortunately we couldn't do more, it simply was too stormy and cold.

  1. Hi Gattina - it has been cold and rather horrid ... yesterday we had a lovely day, but today it's clouded up again ... I expect it was interesting to see the changes ... love the statue sculpture of Jupp Schmitz ... glad you at least saw some things - another visit is obviously due when it's warmer! Cheers Hilary

  2. What a beautiful city Cologne is. Thanks to google I was able to see and learn much more about the Cathedral. Love the piano statue. My grandson leaves for a month in Europe next week, I know he will be in Germany and I hope Cologne is on his itinerary.

  3. I really liked Cologne, but I recognise little from your photos. I remember of course St Stephens and I do remember the bridge across the Rhine.

  6. Oh, they do do good cakes in Germany. Just thinking about them makes me hungry...

  7. I don't remember anything about Cologne except the Cathedral and the Rhine. But I do remember that it was raining when I visited too even though it was August.

  8. It looks like an interesting city and too bad the weather prevented you from seeing more. I'm glad to see it has recovered from war damages.

  9. Hi Gattina - no I didn't know who Jupp Schmitz was ... but I wanted to know - as the sculpture is a lovely one ... and then I learnt about the square and its importance now ... but I looked him out! Cheers Hilary
