The Lurchers want to know what book I am reading now. What's it about? Are you enjoying it and why? If not, why not ?
And secondly, if I were to be stranded on a desert island, what one book would I take with me ?
For the moment I am reading "Im Kühlschrank brennt immer Licht" (Hilla Janssen) which means "There is always a light burning in the fridge" it's a very funny book about a young woman's life. I have read so many books in my life, that now I love to read something light, just before I fall asleep.
The second question is rather difficult, I think I would need a very big book so that it lasts quite a while until I will be rescued. So I would take "Gone with the Wind" or "The Godfather" with me and as I have read both of them already I wouldn't be disappointed when the rescue comes too quick because I know already the end.
It's good to take a break with a light read. Good for you.

ReplyDeleteOn BBC Radio 4 they have a programme called 'Desert Island Discs'. A different person is interviewed each week and asked, if you were on that desert island, which 7 records/CDs would you take with you?
ReplyDeleteThen, they have to choose 1 luxury and 1 book. They automatically get the Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare, but they can choose one more.
The luxury can't have any 'useful' ability. So you couldn't take a Swiss Army Knife or a set of tools or a boat!!
They often have very interesting people incl. artists and writers.
I would have a hard time choosing, I think, but my luxury might be a big fluffy towel because I hate to have sand in my toes :)

Yes, those are two great reads. I've read heaps of books, too, and I'd like a book that would keep me going for quite some time.

ReplyDeleteYou should take something challenging to read, say, Emmanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Perhaps it is less dense in German (I doubt it). I spend a year studying it in university and I am not sure I figured it out.
Sounds like something I would really like to read...perhaps on the basis of humor [from the title?]

GWTW or Godfather would be good reads to take along. Your island looks pretty scary though - perhaps GWTW would be the better choice on that particular island...

Now that's a good idea - anticipate rescue and therefore bring a book you know! Good plan.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the book choices: Puzo's The Godfather was an amazing read and not full of challenging silences as I remember the film (I just cannot imagine sitting through that in a cinema not even allowed to light up a fag for 3 hours... puh-leeeze!!)
One you might like if you've not come across it already is Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds it was a massive late 70s/early 80s bestseller and incredibly well written. Plus it's the only "romance" novel I've EVER managed to finish... if you come across it I'd advise you give it a go and tell me what you thought!

I've read Gone with the Wind, but not the Godfather. Great choices for a LONG stay on the island.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but not only have I not read 'Gone With The Wind', but I don't think I've seen the film in its entirity either. Once I sit down, whether it be to read, watch a film or listen to music, it's not long before I find myself drifting off to sleep. And 'Gone With The Wind' is such a looooooong film!
I still think a library & a dog for the desert island!
