HODGEPODGE DECEMBER

1. What's one task you'd like a little Christmas elf to sneak in and take care of tonite?

There is no little elf sneaking into my apartment, the only one who sneaks around during the night is my cat Rosie and distributes her fake mice all over the place. I wish she would do that during the day and not the night.

2. What's your biggest challenge during the holidays?

As I am retired and live in "my" castle, I have no challenges anymore, but I had enough during my life ! The biggest challenge was that my parents came over Christmas and my mother wanted to change my whole house ! Christmas was always very stressing !

3. Are you a cookie baker this time of year? If your year had to be summed up in the shape of a cookie cutter what shape would it be?

I never baked in my whole life and Christmas cookies I got from my mother who baked for a whole army, she loved baking and they were very good. I wasn't allowed to watch how she did it, I was in her way. I had no favorite shape.

4. Santa likes milk with his cookies. Do you like milk? What kind of milk is on tap in your house? (whole, 2%, skim, almond, oat, etc). What's the last thing you made that called for milk?

Our Santa preferred a glass of Cognac on the open fire and 3 carrots for his donkey. Usually Rick took care of the cognac and I ate the carrots ! Nobody in our family drinks milk, we are all allergic !

5. Share one favorite line from a Christmas carol or holiday tune?

"Rock around the Christmas tree"

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I have no special thought, maybe with each year Christmas is less cozy and warm. I have decorated my room but without tree, because I have done it since I knew Rick and he loved my decoration and we always had a big tree. Now everything is different, no gifts anymore, under the tree because we have everything, my grandson prefers money he is saving for an electric bike. I just follow I have to look into the future and not back in the past, Rick is gone and my family celebrates in another way. Which is OK for me. The most important is being together.

  1. I have young adult nephews and always do cash or gift cards. It doesn't feel super personal but is what they want so in that sense I guess it is. Cats are so funny! Have a wonderful day!

  3. Random thought. Our beautiful black labrador died from old age when Covid started and I think the lab kennels closed for 3.5 years. As soon as I can walk on my ankle that was recently broken, I plan to find a perfect black lab puppy.

  4. The Santa who delivered our Christmas presents on Christmas morning would not have liked milk either. More like some beer or whisky.

  5. We stopped giving each other gifts for the same reason...we don't need anything. We were just exchanging gift cards...so we thought that was kind of silly. Better to gift someone needy or to a charity. I adopted a resident from my work, and bought her some new clothing and a few other odd and ends.
We don't have daughters in law (yet...) so we are just a small gathering to share a nice meal. The doggies get a specail dinner then too.
I only have small trees on tables. And a few other things to make it a bit festive in here, but the most of my seasonal things remain in their boxes. I should give it all away!

How cool that St Nicholas visited you personall!y! Being of Dutch heritage, my parents often spoke of Dec 5 or 6 and the things they did in the old country.
