THE BED

The bed is a very important item in our life. Imagine that we spend at least the half of our life in our (or others) beds ?

It all started with our ancestors long before Jesus lay in his first bed a crip !

The very first "beds" were just a piece of fur or some hay or straw. The latter was not very enjoyable, as bugs, fleas and other cute critters wanted to sleep with you. The human became inventive and put wooden legs under a plank. That made it a little more difficult for unwanted bed companions. By then somebody thought if he would cover the straw or hay with a fabric it would be more protected. Then the bed frames were invented.

And the creativity for beds went on and on

until we had this kind of bed. Of course it was not for everybody it was only for the nobels. They needed a good sleep to be able to manage their servants, who slept on very simplified beds.

The bed was not only a place to sleep peacefully during the night, it was also a battle field for couples to produce babies that's why we are all here today.

Especially in winter time or wet weather the bed as battle field replaced other places like fields, grass, benches or nowadays cars.

Unfortunately the bed is not only a place of pleasure, but also a place where you have to lay down when you are sick or even die. That's the bad side of our beds.

Wherever you live in the world, beds are standing in your home. Modern or antique ones it depends on your taste.

With that I wish you a good night !

  1. Hilarious post! Excellent wording. We need to upgrade our bed - it's far too small for two humans and three fat cats.

  2. That image of a Toulouse Lautrec painting made me smile. A great share today. Thank you. We bought anew bed last year and it is designed for how we sleep, if you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper etc. they make a bed just for you. Wonderful share. Have a good weekend.

  3. I love my bed and am so happy I don't have to share with fleas and bugs. I love reading in bed and always have a stack of books in the bed with me. The only thing missing right now is a cat to share my bed.

  5. It is interesting to note in our lifetimes how mattresses have become so much better than those of our childhoods. Not that a lumpy old mattress stops a child from sleeping, but I am sure it would stop me from sleeping.

  6. We take our beds for granted. I love to get under the covers when it's cold and damp.

  7. You are funny. But this post made me sleepy. In the South here, we have Live Oak Trees that have long moss attached. We learned once on a tour that the Colonial people thought that would make a great stuffing for mattresses. And they used it for quite a few years, until they realized that insects that came with the moss were biting the sleepers. To this day we have a saying 'good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite."
