FUN MONDAY - CHRISTMAS SONGS

Cynical Girl wants to know :

What Christmas (or other holiday) song would you prefer never to hear again, and why? It could be one song in particular, or songs by a certain singer, or a version of a song you usually enjoy that grates on your nerves. We promise not to judge. It’s your chance to vent.

A few years ago I heard Christmas songs everywhere. I knew it was Christmas songs because I understand English. The Belgian people thought it was just a nice music. Gingle Bell etc is known now, but as it is only played in December people relate it to Christmas now, that's the same with all other English Christmas songs, except of cause the classical once, like "Silent Night" and "Oh Christmas tree" etc which also exists in French.

By the time it was Christmas I couldn't hear a Christmas song anymore, neither in English nor in French. But the last two years I think the shops start later or I am becoming deaf, anyway so far I haven't heard a single Christmas song in a mall, store or shops. But I haven't been shopping very much either.

So I don't really have a song that I don't like to hear, but I have two, a little special songs for you.

Silent night in meauw

and the most famous French Christmas song which everybody can sing. Tino Rossi sang "Petit Papa Noël" (little Father Christmas) for the first time in 1946, it was sold more than thirty million copies worldwide ! and it's still the favourite, although other singers sang it, like Celine Dion.

  2. Socks is so attentive to his conductor--those eyes, that stare! Beautiful coloring. The Petit Papa Noel is a new carol for me, Gattina. Thanks for sharing--so simple and melodic and loved the orchestra background.

Smart woman to stay out of stores--you surely would be bombarded with the worst of Christmas music.

  4. I love the Petite Papa Noel! So sweet. Even though I don't know French, I could pick up the love in that song. :)

  5. Sweet, sweet posts and videos for us today Ms. G!!!

The one song I just LOATHE here in America is "Granny got run over by a reindeer". To me it is demeaning to the holiday. It is trying to make funny the art of drinking....it just isn't Christmasey at all!

My favorite is O Holy Night.

  6. Leave it up to us Americans to overdo something.. Christmas in American has become so commercialized and it makes me so sad. It's hard to teach our children the real meaning of Christmas (the birth of Jesus...if you are a christian) when everywhere you look there is a santa clause and holiday music before halloween. The stores are so competitative and it just looks like greed to me. So enjoy your peaceful Beligium at Christmas..you are so lucky not to have to deal with the madness. I like the Petit Papa Noel..first time ever hearing it. Thanks for sharing Gattina and Happy FM

  7. I agree with Janis, I just try to do the shopping I need to do and then focus on what Christmas really means to us, nothing more. One of my favorite very non-traditional songs is a version of a song called 'Belleau Wood' by country singer Garth Brooks. It's about the truce called on a battlefield for Christmas, so the soldiers could have a peaceful Christmas, and then all of them, in their own language, sing silent night, in hopes that the war ends soon. Fighting resumes at midnight, but they are all left with hope.

  8. LOL! Why in the world would they play OUR Christmas songs in your country? I'm sure you must have many many Christmas carols of your own? No? That Petit Papa Noel is verrrrrry pretty! Those are the ONLY words I recognized in it - but it's a pretty song. I WISH that WE did not have to hear Christmas songs in September/October! THAT is when our stores start playing them! Thus the question! And that is why we are sick of them by Christmas time! I don't pay attention though. The songs in the stores make me want to NOT shop. Now I listen to my favorites on CD at home. But I can tell you this... If I NEVER heard Alvin and The Chipmunks sing again it would be okay with me -- oh and the dogs singing We Wish You a Merry Christmas.... ugh!

  12. Tooo funny for the cats --
one of those songs people love to hate.

Our cat is singing that lately... because it was like 9 degrees last night. She likes to take a run outside before bedtime. But as soon as she went outside she turned around and sang the song at the door.

Of course I let her back in immediately.

  13. I'm not sure I've ever heard 'Petite Papa Noel' before even though it's been around since I was about 2 years old!

  14. Petit Papa Noel is pretty!

I don't have a problem with Santa Claus - as long as it's not overdone. The big, loud fat guy act is a bit over the top. But as a personification of the spirit of giving, I think he's lovely.

Lucky you, to not be bombarded with Christmas music constantly. I think that's part of the reason so many people are developing a dislike for it.

    Youpi ho
    ton cheval a des ailes
    Youpi ho!!!
