FUN MONDAY - No Thanksgiving

Wendishness our host this week said :

I thought we could consider Thanksgiving Day which will be the following Thursday in the USA. Though I know a lot of us aren’t in the US so don’t celebrate this, it might be nice to share some of the things we are thankful for in our lives.

In Belgium and the rest of Europe we don't celebrate "Thanksgiving" for the simple reason that we stayed in the "old" world and didn't emigrate to the "new" one with the Mayflower pilgrims. The "first Thanksgiving" was the celebration at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The Plymouth celebration occurred early in the history of what would become one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States. The celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s.

Being part of the once whose ancestors stayed here, I have other things to celebrate today for which I am thankful.

I just returned from my holidays in Egypt and arrived yesterday evening safe and sound at home, my head is still full of memories and I was very thankful for the most simplest things in the world :

- That my bed didn't break down again in my room
- That I found a cup to drink my coffee (finally I bought my own)
- That there was a plate to put food on
- That somebody had filled the coffee machine
- That we got a knife a fork and a spoon. The dream of a coffee spoon we gave up.
- That I didn't have to run behind 3 or 4 waiters to get a paper napkin
- That they only asked me once to empty my half full glass because they needed it to prepare a cocktail for another client and apparently that was the only cocktail glass they had in a 4* lol Hotel, and I only had an alcohol free beer in there.
- That we found a beach bed every morning
- That we got toilet paper and towels

And as we got this all and my bed didn't break down again, I am very thankful and decided not to go back to the Regina Beach Hotel again !

It looks so beautiful, but the service is lousy.

  4. Are you saying America is a myth? I kid. Thanksgiving is an important part of our folklore, that's true, whether there was a big feast where pilgrims and indians sat down together to pumpkin pie, though, is up for debate. Ha! I'm sorry your service was so lousy, I hope that the rest of your stay and travels made up for it! I signed up late, please drop by and visit, and if you have a couple of seconds, scroll to the post below and vote on my project!

  5. Yes... it occurs to me this morning that "vacations" are not always what we expect them to be... No matter where we go ... or who we visit!

  6. Glad to hear your home safe n sound. I wouldn't return to that hotel either. The American people take our Thanksgiving very serious..We are proud to be in "The new world" and I am thankful that I have many friends like yourself who live in the "Old world. When you really take a good look at it...we are all Gods children and we all bleed red! Thanks for sharing Gattina and happy FM

  7. Glad you are home safe and sound!
I only have to cook a turkey for Hubby, and two friends. So it will be a quiet day. Nice.
I grew up very close to Plymouth Rock and have ancestors who came here, way back then. So, Thanksgiving is always special for me.

  8. ONE GLASS???? That's amazing! And not in a good way.

Bet you were glad to get back home. It might not be as ritzy in appearance, but the service is a heck of a lot better!

  10. Ah one of the pitfalls of travel! I would never not travel, but I do begin to miss the comforts of home--my own kind of coffee, a washcloth, my bed, and my dog. The great thing about travel though is all the memories you store away for those long winter months when you don't travel. where to next Gattina?

  11. We don't celebrate it here either but I think its a great idea! I am always thankful to just come home after a holiday. My own bed is always so welcoming!

  13. Welcome home! Good decision on skipping the hotel in future, it sounds like "Faulty" Towers!!

Fawlty Towers is a classic TV show about a hotel at the English Riviera where everything goes wrong. Maybe your hotel in Egypt had been watching it as a training video ;-)
